Synopsis

Father William Bowdern is a priest who is haunted by devastating memories of his military service as a chaplain during World War II. Asked by a fellow priest to save the life and soul of a child who becomes possessed after the death of his aunt, Father Bowdern must confront his past when he clashes not only with demonic forces, but with a powerful Archbishop with a political agenda.

After the death of his Aunt Hanna, several inexplicable and frightening events take place around Robbie Mannheim -- including screaming obscenities in a voice different from his own and summoning the power to thrust furniture at those who bully him at school. His parents turn to science and medicine to try and help Robbie but to no avail. In desperation, they call on Father William Bowdern, a professor at the Jesuit-run St. Louis University. Bowden is coping with his own problems; devastating memories of his military service as a Chaplain during World War II. These become so debilitating that they threaten his ability to serve both his students and his congregation.

After listening to the Mannheim family's plea for help, Bowdern agrees to put his own troubles aside and try to help. He decides to perform an exorcism even though his own mental stability, let alone Robbie's life and soul, may be at risk. Before this collision of good and evil is over, Bowdern finds himself challenged not only by demonic forces, but also by the powerful Archbishop Hume, who keeps himself distanced from the young boy and his problems for political reasons.

As Robbie starts to weaken, the allegiance of Bowdern's best friend, Father Raymond McBride, begins to waver along with his own courage. After several attempts at an exorcism fail at the Mannheim home, Bowdern makes a decision to move Robbie to the Alexian Brothers Hospital -- a religious hospital run by monks. In this sacred place, Bowdern will perform the final exorcism -- Robbie's last hope for sanity.
