Synopsis

Children's drama adapted for younger audiences from Jules Verne's classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." The special is hosted by two life-size animatronic characters, "Literacy Lion" and his wisecracking friend "Toucan," who introduce the special and provide information on the story and its author, Jules Verne. In the special 13-year-old Captain Nemo, the brilliant scientist, rejects the absurdity of the modern world and seeks refuge in a submarine called Nautilus. When a 10-year-old professor of zoology, Pierre Aronnax, his sister, 11-year-old Elizabeth Arronax, and 10-year-old Ned Land, a superior harpoonist, travel the ocean on a warship in search of a sea-monster that has been attacking ships around the world, they come face to face with the legendary "monster" which is actually Nemo's ship. Nemo then takes the group on an incredible journey into the depths of the ocean before they realize he has no intention of ever freeing them.
