Synopsis
Movie based on the life of British 19th century actress and anti-slavery activist Fanny Kemble.
On a theatrical tour of the United States, Fanny Kemble falls in love with and marries Pierce Butler, a wealthy American lawyer. Their storybook marriage begins to disintegrate when Fanny wants to have her controversial journals published, against the wishes of Pierce. In an effort to repair the marriage, Fanny suggests they move their family from Philadelphia to Georgia, where Pierce's family owns a plantation.
At the plantation, Fanny witnesses slavery and all its horror. She shows compassion by trying to aid Joe and Harriet, among others. Fanny seeks out medical care for the ill, teaches the slaves to read, and, with the help of Dr. Huston, helps several slaves escape through the Underground Railroad. Her interest in justice drives a wedge between her and her husband. They eventually divorce and Fanny returns to Philadelphia to live with her friend Elizabeth Sedgwick. While polishing her acting skills, Fanny contines to fight for the abolition of slavery, even if her battle prevents her from seeing her children. Her journals, which were once a source of controversy, become key writings that ultimately turn British public opinion against the Confederacy and change the outcome of the Civil War.
