Synopsis

Traces the journey of a black baby who is born to a white woman in the early 1960s, given up for adoption and 34 years later reunited with her birth mother. In 1961, Gerry Cummins is raped by a black man near her home in Boston. When Gerry discovers that she is pregnant, she and her husband Bob hope that Bob is the father of the baby. Gerry and Bob are faced with a painful decision when their child is born black. They baptize her Barbara Ann Cummins, then give her to a black foster mother, Corrine Burrell. Corrine becomes Barbara's mother for the next seven years until social workers determine that Barbara must be removed from the "ghetto." Barbara goes to live with a white couple, Annalise and Paul Jurgenson, in Milwaukee, but the unhappy couple soon divorce. A teenage Barbara becomes pregnant by her high school sweetheart Don, marries him and moves in with his family. Years later, Barbara is encouraged by her doctor to find her birth mother.
