Synopsis

A film adaptation of Richard Strauss's monumental one-act opera, based on the play by Sophocles. Set in ancient Mycenae in the time just after the Trojan War, the story depicts a young woman, Elektra, who plots revenge on her mother, Klytemnestra, for the murder of her father, King Agamemnon. The production was filmed in an abandoned warehouse in Vienna, and features the final performance by the celebrated conductor, Karl Boehm, who died in 1982, shortly after the film was made. Following the opera, a short documentary, "Sound and Fury: The Making of Elektra" is presented, with comments from soprano Leonie Rysanek, who sings the title role, and from conductor Karl Boehm.
