Synopsis
Dual biography of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln, focusing on their marriage. The program follows the couple from their strikingly different childhoods to their years in the White House; uncovers their ambitions and fears; and paints a picture of a couple who loved each other, quarreled intensely, and who were frequently forced to mourn. It also describes the impact of Lincoln's assassination on the nation and on the sanity of his wife. Elected to the Oval Office only to see the nation split in two, Abraham Lincoln led the country through its most terrible conflict -- the Civil War. At the same time, his own household mirrored the troubles of the nation: the Great Emancipator was married to the daughter of a slave owner. Mary Todd Lincoln lost three half-brothers to Lincoln's armies and was frequently accused of being a Confederate sympathizer.
