Synopsis
In 1944, Minnie and Mac McGhee, two light-skinned blacks, bring their family from Detroit's inner city to a nearby all-white neighborhood. When the residents find out that their community's covenant barring black families from living in their neighborhood has been broken, they hire legal counsel to try to force the new family to move out. Despite Minnie's pleading, Mac insists on staying in the community until they triumph in the lawsuit or are forced out of their home. Anna and Benjamin Sipes are the next-door neighbors to the McGhee family. As the newest white family on the block, the residents convince Benjamin to take the lead in the lawsuit. Anna finds herself constantly fighting with her husband and pointedly intensifies her friendship with Minnie. The NAACP provides legal support for the McGhees all the way to the US Supreme Court where a young Thurgood Marshall argues the case and wins, allowing the McGhees to keep their home.
