Rodgers and Hammerstein's stage musical was previously adapted to a live action film version as "The King and I" (USA/1956), directed by Walter Lang and starring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brenner. Another film covering the same material, "Anna and the King of Siam" (USA/1946), was directed by John Cromwell and starred Irene Dunne and Rex Harrison.
