Synopsis

Jesse Thompson, a runaway youth who is trying to earn money to support his destitute mother, meets up with a gang of youths who are homeless wanderers living by their wits. When they commit a petty offense, the judge turns the boys over to businessman Albee, who promises to provide them with employment in a turpentine camp. Upon their arrival at the camp, the boys are locked away behind barbed wire and are made virtual prisoners.

They are soon forced into debt by the exorbitant prices they must pay at the company store. Dizzy from hunger and overwork, Miser, one of the boys, falls from a tree in which he is working and is forced to have his arm amputated. Later, Tim, their leader who chose to be sent to prison rather than submit to the camp, is paroled to the camp, where he tries to organize a revolt for decent working conditions. The revolt fails, however, and Jesse suggests that they send a letter to the president's wife detailing the inhumane conditions of the camp. The boys regard Jesse as a stool pigeon and a spy, but they go along with his plan.

With his precious letter in hand, Jesse climbs the barbed wire fence, but becomes lost in the woods and is captured by the guards and returned to camp. Jesse is facing the boys' recriminations when Annie, Albee's young housekeeper and a slave herself, bursts into their cabin, pursued by the brutal overseer. In the ensuing struggle, the overseer shoots Jesse in the back and knocks a lamp from the ceiling, sparking a fire. In the chaos, the boys flee the camp and bury Jesse.

Chased by the guards and their dogs, they take refuge in a farm house where Albee and his men start shooting at them. The shots draw the attention of a state trooper who arrests Albee and his men. Annie convinces Tim and the boys to give themselves up, and they are brought before a compassionate judge who sends them to a state farm and sentences Albee to prison.
