Synopsis

Jane, Ginette, Rita, and Jacqueline are young Parisians working in an electric appliance store. Bored with their humdrum working day, they seek glamour, happiness, and love during their free evenings. Jane is engaged to a soldier but, because of his absence and her hunger for excitement, she allows herself to be picked up by strangers who promise a night of carousing. Ginette, oldest and most secretive of the group, finds her escape by donning a black wig and singing Italian songs in a second-rate theatre. Her pleasure abruptly ends when the other girls discover her carefully guarded secret. Rita believes herself in love with the son of a shopkeeping family until she meets his penny-pinching parents and realizes that marriage to him would be merely changing her environment. Jacqueline, youngest and most innocent of the quartet, demurely permits herself to be followed everywhere by a young man on a motorcycle. One Sunday afternoon, he approaches her and takes her to the country. They have lunch at an old inn, and then he takes her for a walk in the nearby woods and brutally murders her.
