Synopsis

Captain Buck Pearson is sent to San Dimas, California, to investigate claims that gold-mad Americans are forcing Mexican landowners from their property. Meanwhile, Ted Graham and his desperados attack the Cantova homestead. Old Don Pedro is killed during the fight. Upon his arrival in San Dimas, Buck has his first encounter with Graham, who is threatening to kill a young Mexican boy, and Buck saves the boy's life. Later, calling at the Land Office, Buck learns that the local agent has been killed and that his frightened assistant Barclay has taken over. Meanwhile, the Cantovas are again under attack. The two oldest children, Juan and Dolores, try to go for help, but are ambushed by Graham and his men. Buck, the first American to help the family, rescues them and they gratefully acknowledge their new friend. Mal Halstead, the leader of the landgrabbers, forces Barclay to make false claims in the register book, dispossessing the Mexicans of their ancestral property. While hiding in another room, Halstead listens to Buck and Juan when they visit the Land Office, and deduces that Buck is with the government. The desperados return to the Cantova land to force them out, and the ailing Mama tells Juan and Dolores that they must leave. Walking away, they kneel at a roadside statue of the Virgin Mary, and Mama collapses and dies. Juan blames Halstead and his men for Mama's and Don Pedro's deaths and in retaliation, he captures and hangs one of the gang members. A warrant is put out for Juan's arrest. Buck prevents Juan from murdering Barclay, and demands that Barclay turn over all records so that an accurate accounting of ownership can be made. That evening, Buck and Juan return to the Land Office to find Barclay dead and all the records gone. Juan is captured and when Buck comes to his aid, a fight ensues which leaves Juan dead. Buck, who is followed by Dolores, returns to his superiors to report the awful conditions in California and is assigned to return and restore law and order. Buck and Dolores plan to return to the state as husband and wife.
