Synopsis
At Camp Cameron, a camp for boys orphaned during the war, Thaddius Cameron learns that the nephew, Frank Dennis, who has been missing since the war, has been found alive. Excited by the news, Thad takes the advice of his attorney, Hattie Waters, and sends for Frank right away. At her office, Hattie explains that Frank has suffered from amnesia since the war, and recommends that Thad alter his will to include Frank. After Hattie tricks Thad into signing a blank piece of paper, he is attacked and killed on his way home by a pack of trained dogs that look like wolves. When the dogs' trainer calls the dogs to return after the attack, all but one return. Meanwhile, as Marshal Roy Rogers leaves the post office, he notices a man inside the stable where Trigger waits. Roy tries to grab the man, but when he notices Roy's badge, the man runs away. At the office of physician Cookie Bullfincher, Roy is introduced to his nurse, Penny Thatcher. Cookie examines bite marks left on Thad's body and determines that they were actually made by dogs rather than wolves. Hattie then arrives at the office with the news that Thad has left his entire estate to Frank. Later, Roy and Cookie search for clues at Timber Ridge, where Thad was attacked. When Roy spots the trained dog nearby, he lassos it, and back in town, Cookie administers a sedative so that he can treat the dog's wounds. They nickname him "El Lobo," and after Hattie learns from her henchman Vic Rabin that the dog has been found, she goes to Cookie's office where El Lobo uncontrollably barks at her. Suspecting foul play in Thad's death, Roy instructs the insurance company to withhold payment of the estate while he continues his investigation. Later, when Vic tries to stab the dog, Roy stops him. Roy travels to the camp, where Hattie explains to the boys that because of Roy's interference, the camp will have to be closed. She asks everyone to sign a petition to remove Roy from duty, but Roy rips it up. When Hattie and Vic notice El Lobo waiting for Roy outside the camp, they try to kidnap him, but the dog runs away. With help from the men of the Citizen's Protection Agency, Vic captures Roy and they drag him behind a galloping horse. When he sees Roy in trouble, his horse Trigger stops the other horse and Roy escapes on him. Cookie learns that Roy has been looking for him, and visits the camp where he shoots Vic in the arm. After Roy loses his badge, Hattie recruits an ex-convict named Frank Dennis to pose as Thad's nephew. At Hattie's office, when Vic overhears Frank planning to cheat them and take all of the inheritance for himself, he sets the dogs on him. Later, after Vic pays members of the Agency, Roy suddenly interrupts them. Hattie sets the dogs on Roy, but El Lobo chases the pack away and returns, frightening Hattie into heart failure. Vic attempts to hide in the livery stable, but Roy arrests him.
