Synopsis

Wealthy but difficult Jessica Van Alyn and her meek husband Harvey keep the models at Mme. Celeste's fashionable dress shop working late. In the dressing rooms, two models, Peggy Rooney and Yvonne, quarrel over handsome stock boy Jimmy O'Brien. Later, Jimmy discovers Yvonne's body and the entire staff is questioned by the police, who learn that Yvonne broke up the marriage of Celeste and Jacques Duval, the store's owner. Recently, however, Yvonne became engaged to the wealthy Davis. Because everyone except Jimmy has an alibi, Jimmy is taken into custody for Yvonne's murder, but Peggy convinces policeman O'Hara that Jimmy did not have time to kill Yvonne, and O'Hara releases him. Peggy then starts her own investigation. Later, Davis asks Duval for a brooch that he gave to Yvonne and offers $5,000 to the person who returns it. Celeste spots the brooch on Peggy, who grabbed it from a box of costume jewelry, but before she can claim it, Marie Lewis, another model, takes it to wear with her suit and leaves the store. Soon after, Jimmy is asked to deliver an altered dress to the Van Alyns, and Peggy accompanies him. When the police stop Jimmy because the back door of his truck is open, they discover Duval's body inside. Peggy runs away, but Jimmy is arrested and Celeste and Davis are also questioned. Later, Peggy helps Jimmy escape, and they decide to hide out at Marie's apartment. When they arrive, they discover that Marie has been strangled, but has circled the name "Jeffries" in the phone book. Donning disguises, Marie and Jimmy search Duval's office for some information on Jeffries, but find nothing. Meanwhile, the police intercept a call to Peggy from Jeffries. Peggy manages to get the number and arranges to meet Jeffries secretly. When she arrives at the address that Jeffries gave her, she is surprised to see that it is the Van Alyn residence. She quickly learns that Jeffries is the Van Alyns' butler and Van Alyn is the killer. He was being blackmailed by Yvonne, and killed the others when they prevented him from retrieving his wife's brooch, which he had given to Yvonne. He is about to murder Peggy as well when the police arrive and arrest him.
