Synopsis

After a coalition of black and white students occupies the administration building of Hudson University and forces the college president to resign, the revolutionaries submit to the board of trustees a list of people whom they respect, among them Paco Perez. Consequently, Perez, a Puerto Rican sociology professor, is appointed acting president of the university to facilitate negotiations, thereby pitting the aging radical against many of his former student friends. Dempsey and Rossiter, respective leaders of the black and white factions, disagree on some matters, but when Perez informs them that three of their demands cannot be met, all the radicals stand fast in their refusal to leave the building. In addition to his lack of success with the negotiations, Perez' graduate student mistress, Rhoda, accuses him of sexual inadequacy. When the harassed Perez learns of a threat by Rossiter to destroy the university's $2,000,000 computer if their demands are not met, he calls in the police who provoke a riot by exploding tear gas and beating students, including Rhoda, who has joined the radicals. At the courthouse, Perez is congratulated by the board of directors for ending the crisis, but he is aware that the goals of the students were right, even if their methods were not; as he leaves the courthouse, he is booed by the student body.
