Synopsis
Dance director George Randall walks out of a show he is rehearsing when the star is replaced by Peggy Revere, a woman whose only claim to fame is that she shot her husband. After learning that George is at liberty, producer Fred Harris hires him for his new show. What George doesn't know is that Peggy is backing this show and plans to star in it as well. She is furious when she learns that George has been hired and tears up his contract. Fred decides that he will use psychology to reconcile Peggy and George, by convincing her that hatred is really a sign of love. Embarrassed to admit that she doesn't know what Fred is talking about, she believes him and decides she and George are in love with each other. Meanwhile, George has fallen in love with Ruth Williams, who wants a job in show business. George tries to talk Ruth out of her ambitions because he believes that show business will corrupt her. Determined to get a job, Ruth decides to approach Fred on her own. Hoping to impress her, Gilmore Frost, an actor, helps Ruth get the job, making George feel that she was only being nice to him because of his position. Then when Ruth sees George singing a new love song to Peggy, she thinks he is in love with her. During the out-of-town tryouts, the show is a failure because Peggy is so untalented. She quarrels with Frost and he hits her. When George insists that she must go to the hospital for an X-ray, Ruth prepares to go on stage instead of Peggy. At the last minute, Peggy bursts in and insists she is able to perform. Upon seeing Frost, she shoots him. The police arrest her and take Frost away, too. Now that the show is taken care of, George, who will substitute for Frost, asks Ruth to marry him.

A news item in Hollywood Reporter states that Warner Bros. considered replacing Dick Powell, whose doctor had ordered him to rest his throat, with Rudy Vallee, whose recent alimony problems had been cleared up, allowing him to return to California.
