Synopsis
Happy Smith, a cheerful, derelict soldier of fortune living in a small Latin American republic, accepts $5,000 to guide a party of marines into the interior to look for several missing Americans. After a difficult trip through the jungle, the marines come upon the bodies of the missing Americans and discover a dying woman who has just given birth to a baby. The woman recognizes Happy and, before her death, tells Sergeant Wilmer that 9 years previously Happy had deserted from the Marine Corps in order to protect her husband from the consequences of stealing the regimental funds. The marines make their way back to civilization, keeping the baby alive with goat's milk. Happy is invited to reenlist, but he decides to stay in Latin America with his sweetheart, Innocencia, and his new baby.
