Biography
Cinematographer Robert Aschmann has worked on everything from the indie drama "Mile Zero" to the controversial TV series "The L Word," all the while maintaining a reputation as a respected cameraman and director of photography. He moved from Switzerland to Canada in the late '80s, and a decade later, he worked as cinematographer on the award-winning indie film "Kitchen Party," about a group of friends who throw an impromptu house party, and the unsettling "Rollercoaster," centered on a group of aimless teens who break into a local amusement park. In 2001, Aschmann had a major year, working on "Lilith on Top," a documentary about Lilith Fair, the successful '90s all-female music festival, featuring interviews with founder Sarah McLachlan and participants such as Liz Phair and Sheryl Crow; he also served as cinematographer on "Mile Zero," about a bitter father caught in a nasty divorce battle. After working on "The Overcoat," a Canadian TV adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's famous short story, Aschmann served as director of photography on "Bang Bang You're Dead," a tightly-wound thriller starring Tom Cavanaugh ("Ed") as a teacher willing to give high school outcast Ben Foster ("The Messenger") a second chance. Since working on the TV movie "My Name is Sarah," about one woman's recovery from a nervous breakdown, Aschmann worked on over 30 episodes of "The L Word," about a close-knit group of lesbians living in Los Angeles.
