Biography

Joe Cunningham brought his talents off the baseball field and into the entertainment industry. Cunningham began his acting career with roles in such films as "Fugitive in the Sky" (1936) with Jean Muir, "Kid Galahad" (1937) and the drama "Blondes at Work" (1938) with Glenda Farrell. He also appeared in the comedy "Four's a Crowd" (1938) with Errol Flynn, the comedic adaptation "Going Places" (1938) with Dick Powell and "Torchy Blane in Panama" (1938). His film career continued throughout the thirties in productions like "Torchy Gets Her Man" (1938), "Blackwell's Island" (1939) and the Ronald Reagan adventure "Secret Service of the Air" (1939). He also appeared in "The Rebel Son" (1939), "Torchy Plays With Dynamite" (1939) and "Torchy Runs For Mayor" (1939) with Glenda Farrell. Film continued to be his passion as he played roles in the comedy "Tom, Dick and Harry" (1941) with Ginger Rogers, the drama "Affairs of Jimmy Valentine" (1942) with Dennis O'Keefe and the Jimmy Rogers western "Dudes Are Pretty People" (1942). He also appeared in the drama "The Loss of Sexual Innocence" (1999) with Julian Sands. Cunningham was most recently credited in "Under Hellgate Bridge" (2001). Cunningham passed away in April 1943 at the age of 53.
