Biography

Damon Gupton had a hard time choosing between his two loves of acting and classical music-so he pursued them both. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Gupton became enamored of John Williams during his youth, watching the conductor lead the Boston Pops on television with rapt attention. When it came time for college, Gupton double majored in music education and trombone at the University of Michigan. But when he began considering his options for graduate school, Gupton ultimately went in a different direction, enrolling in the Juilliard School's prestigious acting program. Gupton would land a starring role on the series "Deadline" (NBC, 2000-01) soon after, and acted in acclaimed Broadway productions like Tracey Scott's "The Story," before he became drawn to music again. He won a fellowship conducting the Houston Symphony in 2004 and later studied at Leonard Slatkin's National Conducting Institute in Washington, D.C. Gupton's innate talent for conducting would henceforth become a major figure in the classical world, leading to him conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Princeton Symphony, the Toledo Symphony, the Orquesta Filarmonica de UNAM, and the New York University Orchestra. Gupton never gave up on acting, however. He appeared in a Pulitzer Prize-winning production of "Clybourne Park" in 2011. He later starred on the series "Prime Suspect" (NBC, 2011-12) before joining the cast of the hit series "The Divide" (AMC, 2014-) In 2015, Damon took on the role of Detective Cal Brown on short-lived drama "The Player" (NBC, 2015).
