Biography

One of the most prolific directors and producers of comedy in the 2000s, Troy Miller and his production company, Dakota Pictures, have been involved with virtually every facet of comedic programming. Miller has overseen stand-up specials from scores of popular comedians including Robin Williams, Jim Gaffigan, Katt Williams, and George Carlin, and has worked with many others on films and TV shows. One of his first collaborations came on the HBO series "Mr. Show," the edgy, off-kilter sketch show from Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. This partnership developed into a long-running working relationship with the pair, and in 2002 Miller directed a film spinoff of the show, "Run Ronnie Run." In 2003, Miller teamed up with "Jackass" alum Bam Margera on a similar stunt/prank reality show about Margera and his entourage, called "Viva la Bam." In addition, Miller oversaw two popular musical-comedy shows for HBO, an often difficult genre, first with the David Cross-endorsed "Tenacious D," and later with the uproarious "The Flight of the Conchords" in 2007. Feeling comfortable with most aspects of comedy, Miller was involved with directing, producing, and editing several telecasts of the Academy Awards, and in both 2004 and 2006, the productions were nominated for Emmy awards. In 2009, Miller signed on as an executive producer of another well-received HBO series, this time collaborating with novelist Jonathan Ames on the comedic neo-noir "Bored to Death."
