Screen actor Buck Young had a 40-year career in television and film that saw him appear on over 100 feature films and television series, highlighted by his performance as Sergeant Whipple on "Gomer Pyle, United StatesM.C." in the late 1960s. After serving in the Air Corps during World War II, Young launched his acting career with a series of un-credited roles, and soon married actress Peggy Stewart. TV work throughout the 1950s led to the recurring roles that defined his career, first as Sheriff Buck Johnson on the Western series "United States Marshal" with John Bromfield. A part on "Gunsmoke" followed, as did a small role on "The Andy Griffith Show" in 1965, which led to a larger part on the show's spin-off "Gomer Pyle" that same year. From '70s favorites like the wartime comedy "M*A*S*H" and the 1975 detective flick "Mitchell" to the prime-time action adventure "MacGyver," Buck, a true journeyman actor, always found work. He appeared in multiple hit series every year until 1986, and then he slowed down only slightly, carrying on with work on hit primetime soap "Dallas" and playing opposite Peter Falk's detective "Columbo."
