Started his career as an anchor/radio reporter at WYNR Radio in Chicago

1965

Hired as newswriter by WFLD-TV Chicago

1966

Hired as anchor and education reporter for WIND-AM Chicago

1968

Joined Westinghouse Group W Broadcasting as a White House correspondent

1971

Joined CBS News Washington bureau as a correspondent

1979

Became ABC's senior Capitol Hill correspondent

1980

Joined fledgling cable station CNN as co-anchor

1981

Covered the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan

1991

Reported on the Gulf War live from Bagdad

1995

Covered the bombing of a federal office building in Oklahoma City

2000

Announced plans to leave CNN in February 2001
