Biography

A veteran stage presence, David Margulies has also appeared in numerous films and television series, where he often plays well-educated and professional New Yorkers. He began his movie career in the early '70s, working with such established talent as directors Martin Ritt and Bob Fosse. More small roles followed during the '80s, this time for up-and-coming filmmakers such as Brian De Palma, Ivan Reitman, and Adrian Lyne. All three cast him in projects set in New York City, which helped cement the status of Margulies, who was born in Brooklyn, as a guy who could play authentic-seeming New Yorkers. In De Palma's psychological thriller "Dressed to Kill," he played Dr. Levy, a psychiatrist who makes an important revelation about Dr. Robert Elliott, the deranged stalker portrayed by Michael Caine. Meanwhile, he was highly memorable in Reitman's "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II" as Mayor Lenny--a character speculated to have been inspired by then-New York City mayor Ed Koch. Starting in the mid- to late-'80s, he began working more frequently in television, guest starring in episodes of "Law & Order" throughout the '90s as well as playing Neil Mink, the lawyer of Tony Soprano on the popular series "The Sopranos," in several episodes during the show's run.
