Biography

Marjorie Lord was born Marjorie Wollenberg on July 26, 1918, in San Francisco, CA. Lord practiced ballet as a child and, shortly after moving to New York City at age 15, made her stage debut in the Broadway production of "The Old Maid" (1936). A career on the stage followed quickly; Lord made early appearances in romances like "Border Café" (1937) and comedies like "On Again-Off Again" (1937), "Forty Naughty Girls" (1937), and "High Flyers" (1937). The 1940s brought Lord a marriage to actor John Archer, as well as access to more serious pictures. She lined the decades with adventure films like "Escape from Hong Kong" (1942), mysteries like "Sherlock Holmes in Washington" (1943), and character dramas like "Johnny Come Lately" (1943). Lord's greatest bout of success would come with her transfer to television work; in 1957, she brought the role of Kathy Williams to "Make Room for Daddy," later titled "The Danny Thomas Show" (ABC/CBS 1963-1964), inheriting lead actress position from departing star Jean Hagen. Following the sitcom's cancelation, Lord returned her energies to the stage, acting in a Broadway production of "The Girl in the Freudian Slip" (1967) and a number of dinner theater presentations. Lord made her final screen performance in the TV movie "Side by Side" (1988). She died on Nov. 28, 2015, at age 97.
