After a prologue, cribbed from the original Emile Zola novel in his Rougon-Macquare cycle, the headlong opening scene from director Jean Renoir, in La Bete Humaine, 1938, much of it shot by the director's nephew Claude, in which Lantier (Jean Gabin) and Pecqueux (Julien Carette) bring their train into Le Havre.
