Synopsis
Zatoichi, the blind samurai-masseur, is transporting a young boy, Ryota, to his father in Maebara when the pair are attacked by five men. Zatoichi kills all five and continues on his way, now followed by the samurai Tajuro. Another gang sets upon Zatoichi and Ryota, and this time Tajuro staves off the thugs. In Maebara, Zatoichi learns that Ryota's father is being held captive by Gonzo, the town boss, whose black market operations violate the laws of the ruling shogunate. Tajuro reveals himself as a shogunate agent assigned to destroy the illegal operations. Zatoichi agrees to help him only if he will spare Ryota's father, who had been forced to work for Gonzo. Tajuro, believing he cannot deviate from his mission, refuses the request, thereby setting up a duel between the two friends.
