Synopsis

In feudal Japan Zatoichi, a blind masseur-swordsman, is persuaded by a fellow samurai to sell his services to Hikozo, a warlord preparing for battle with his rival Tobei. Before Zatoichi and his companion can reach their destination, however, they are ambushed by three members of Tobei's clan. In the ensuing battle, Zatoichi kills all of the assailants but not before they have murdered his companion. Continuing alone, Zatoichi accedes to a dying man's request that he return a young woman, Omitsu, safely to her parents. At an inn en route to Omitsu's home, the girl is kidnaped. Using the supersensory perception of the blind, Zatoichi follows the kidnaper's trail and rescues Omitsu. As soon as she is at home, however, she is again kidnaped, this time by the evil Jingoro. Omitsu is being brought before Tobei as Zatoichi is fighting off the members of Tobei's clan, unaware that Hikozo is planning to murder him. Zatoichi finally learns that Tobei's clan is holding Omitsu and that members of his own clan have been plotting against him, whereupon Zatoichi slays all of his antagonists and then makes certain that Omitsu is safely returned to her parents.
