Synopsis

Takuya Shimojo, a student radical, indiscriminately admires Hitler, Mussolini, Trotsky, and Castro, dreaming of some day commanding the same kind of fanatical devotion as his idols attained. Toward the end of the summer, Michihiko, an heir to a large fortune, invites a group of students that includes Takuya and his girl friend, Setsuko, to his seaside villa for sailing and parties. One of the students, Yoko Katsura, receives a call informing her of her father's suicide. According to newspaper reports, Katsura was involved in corruption in the firm which he managed and was forced to commit suicide by Oseto, a Diet member who feared that such a scandal could have adverse political effects. Takuya meets Oseto at a bar, and when Oseto begins discussing nationalism, Takuya bluntly states that he is interested in either murdering the rich or taking their place. Takuya then proposes that Oseto pay a college girl to become his mistress only to discover that Fumie, the bar's hostess, is already his mistress. Seiichi Mizushima, one of Takuya's friends on the radical student committee, asks for help in finding work, but when Takuya attempts to use his influence with Michihiko, the heir coldly turns him down. Takuya becomes attracted to Yoko, who has been humiliated by her family's financial dependence on Oseto, and he asks a boxer friend to beat up Yoko's sister's fiancé, Fujimori, who has broken off their engagement. Expelled from the committee for belonging to a political party and for his amoral conduct, Takuya attends wild parties given by his rich friends, while students protest against a security pact between Japan and the U. S. Yoko leaves home when she discovers that Oseto supports her family in exchange for her sister's sexual favors. Mizushima, unable to find work, hangs himself. As the protests continue, Takuya informs the committee that demonstrations are pointless, and he purchases explosive powders with which to make dynamite. Setsuko reveals that she is carrying his child, but he replies that he is too busy for her now. On the way out of his apartment, he is arrested by detectives in connection with the assault on Fujimori, and his plans for using the dynamite are thwarted.
