Synopsis

One evening in Paris, Anne, a 20-year-old medical student, and Carlo, an Italian photographer, meet at the Medical Students Ball. Their meeting is a moment of magic, and they steal away for a night of lovemaking. In the morning Anne returns to her studies, and Carlo resumes his photography, but some time later, Anne learns that she is pregnant. When they meet again, they profess their love, although both are hesitant about the child. For Carlo its birth will mean certain entrapment in the middle-class world from which he desperately wants to escape; for Anne it means bringing another life into the wretched world that she has seen in hospital wards. An abortion is decided upon, and Carlo raises the money by sleeping with an older woman for a fee. Anne cannot go through with the operation, however, and she races back to Carlo. They go to a small movie theater and take refuge in the crowd of people.
