Synopsis
Asked by a teacher to rescue a maltreated dog from a coalyard, Fabian König is caught scaling the property fence and charged with theft. The youth's teacher denies all knowledge of the incident, and his wealthy parents likewise disbelieve his story. Expelled from school, he becomes the leader of a gang of schoolmates. The group embarks on thefts, first as a test of daring and later more earnestly, using the profits to decorate their headquarters and to finance parties at which moral standards are relaxed. Fabian contacts Bregulla, a receiver of stolen goods. Bregulla is the tenant and lover of the promiscuous Erna Kallies, at whose house Fabian meets Tonia, an orphan and runaway. Fabian falls in love with Tonia, arousing the jealousy of his permissive girl friend, Florence, who claims that Tonia is Bregulla's mistress. Arriving at Erna's house, Fabian interrupts Bregulla as he is attempting to rape Tonia. The girl escapes and goes into hiding, and later that evening Bregulla is found murdered. Fabian is arrested, and, unable to find Tonia to testify on his behalf, he is convicted of manslaughter. Dr. Knittel, the prison doctor, believes in the youth's innocence, however, and conducts his own investigation, uncovering the true murderer, Erna. Tonia reappears, and Fabian, sentenced to serve a 1-year sentence for robbery, knows that she will wait for him.
