Synopsis

King René of Provence has kept his daughter, Yolanta, from the knowledge of her own blindness, secluding her in his remote castle. The king fears that Robert, the Duke of Burgundy, betrothed to Yolanta in childhood, will learn of her affliction and refuse to wed her. Ebn-Khakia, a Moorish physician at the court, claims that he can cure Yolanta if only she knows that she is blind and has the will to see, but the king fears that the shock would be too great for his daughter and continues to keep the secret. Robert comes to the castle with his friend Vaudemont, a brave knight. Although René has forbidden entry on pain of death, Vaudemont meets Yolanta in the garden and falls in love with her. Seeing that she is unaware of her blindness, Vaudemont reveals the truth to her and tells her of the beauties of the world. René threatens that Vaudemont will be put to death if Ebn-Khakia's treatments fail. Robert confesses that he loves another woman, while Vaudemont vows his love for Yolanta irregardless of the success of the treatments. The king agrees to release Robert from his vows and allow Vaudemont to take his place as Yolanta's betrothed; and Yolanta's eyesight is restored.
