Synopsis

American newspaper reporter Mike Malone becomes stranded in Libya when his ship is sunk by Nazis. Mike learns that the local sheik, David, is secretly stockpiling German-manufacturered weapons. Mike steals a gun as proof, but hides it in Nancy Brooks's hotel room when he is chased by David's Arab thugs. Mike later reports to the British consulate that Nazis are trying to start an uprising among the Libyans. British consul Herbert Forbes feigns ignorance of Libyan activities, while Nancy, a British operative, pretends that she has never met Mike. Mike then appeals to British agent Phillip Graham, who urges him to abandon his investigation. Yussof Streyer, a Nazi who operates under the guise of an import/export businessman, urges David's second-in-command, Sheik Ibrahim, to get rid of Mike, because he is stirring up trouble. Ibrahim attacks Mike in a nightclub but Mike escapes unharmed. Phillip later witnesses Ibrahim inciting his fellow Libyans to rise against the British, and as a result, Forbes arrests Mike to prevent him from further interference. Mike's friend, Parkyarkarkus, an itinerant merchant, and Haditha, a bellydancer, help him escape from prison. Mike and Parkyarkarkus go to the desert to steal another rifle from David's camp but are captured and tortured. David, meanwhile, has been entertaining Nancy, who urges the sheik to save Mike, whom Ibrahim plans to kill for his treachery. David detains Nancy and Mike overnight until he can determine if they are his friends or enemies, while Ibrahim and Streyer urge him to declare war against the British. When David refuses because he has signed a treaty with them, Streyer shoots him. As Nancy and Mike escape with the help of Parkyarkarkus, Phillip arrives at the desert camp and finds David apparently dead. Nancy and Mike consult with Forbes, who has known all along about the Nazi infiltration, and merely wanted to prevent Mike from disrupting his covert activities. After angry Libyan tribesmen, led by Ibrahim, flood into the town, Ibrahim tries to incite the rest of his countrymen to attack the British. To everyone's surprise, Phillip arrives with David, whose life was saved when a medal that was awarded to his father by the queen of Britain averted Streyer's bullet. Mike kills Ibrahim before he can shoot David, and Parkyarkarkus, who reveals himself to be an American Military Intelligence officer, captures and kills Streyer. David quells the angry tribesmen, who then leave peacefully. Mike then writes the story for his newspaper and is glad to learn that Nancy, with whom he has fallen in love, is Phillip's sister, not his girl friend.
