Synopsis
To escape from the discordant noises that trouble his sensitive ears, Juanito, a young boy in an Indian village near Mexico City, makes visits on his raft to an island where he plays a homemade violin. Neither his mother nor the villagers understand his love of music, and he is taunted by the other children. One day at a marketplace, Juanito meets an aged, down-on-his-luck concertmaster with a beautiful violin which bears the name "Yanco," and the boy becomes his pupil. When the old man dies, and the violin is appropriated by a storekeeper, who refuses to sell it to Juanito's mother, the boy steals the instrument each night and takes it to the island to play. The sound of the music in the night frightens the villagers until during the Day of the Dead fiesta they take up arms and go in search of the source of the ghostly music. Juanito evades his pursuers but is caught in a whirlpool and drowns.
