Synopsis
Linda and Philip Howard are happily married, living on Long Island with their daughter Janet and Linda's mother, Peg Martin. Then Philip falls in love with an alluring fashion magazine writer named Eve Sheldon. Linda, who has become complacent in her comfortable, middle-class life, is oblivious to her husband's infatuation and does nothing to stop it. Philip leaves Linda and joins one of Eve's friends, Raphela Mendoza, in South America on an exciting engineering project. Linda divorces Philip and rebels against her old life by moving to Manhattan and going into business with her old partner, Jerry Benson, who is now a very successful couturier. Linda discovers she likes the high life and Janet follows her lead. Janet leaves her boyfriend David, a stable young physician, starts going with a group of irresponsible young socialites, and becomes engaged to a millionaire named Brad. When Janet is seriously injured in a car accident caused by Brad's drunken driving, she is treated by David, who realizes he still loves her. David and Janet decide to marry, and Philip, who has postponed marriage to Eve, returns to New York from South America to give his daughter away. At the wedding, Philip realizes that he still loves Linda, and she willingly takes him back.
