Synopsis

While on duty at a "dancing salon," Officer Augusta Winthrop chases away a pimp and then saves his lovelorn target, Peggy, from committing suicide. Concerned about Peggy's emotional state, Augusta asks Anthony Desmond, the drunken but good-natured playboy nephew of Mrs. Eleanor Worthington, the disapproving leader of the local Girls Protective League, to take care of her. While Anthony cheers up Peggy, Mary Sloan, a former girl friend of gangster "Big Bill" Lewis, shows up at Augusta's home with her infant son. Aware of Augusta's reputation as a "straight" policewoman, Mary confesses that she placed some of Lewis' more incriminating papers in a safe deposit box and asks Augusta to care for her baby until she flees safely from the gangster. Augusta agrees and assigns Gladys, Norma and Evelyn, prison parolees whom Augusta has befriended, to watch the baby. Soon after, Lewis, who has had Mary trailed, sets her up in a phony robbery charge and sends the police to arrest her. When Mary sees Lewis' car parked outside of her apartment building, however, she slips away from the police and runs to Augusta, who reluctantly shelters her. Lewis then telephones Jack, a former gangster boyfriend of Gladys', and hires him to renew his acquaintance with Gladys. While Jack and a cohort get Gladys and Evelyn drunk at Augusta's, Lewis contacts Mrs. Worthington and informs her about the "wild" party and about Augusta's harboring of Mary. With the police, Mrs. Worthington raids Augusta's home and exposes Mary's whereabouts. As Mary makes her escape, she is ambushed by Lewis' men and is eventually murdered. Because of her involvement with Mary, Augusta is suspended from the police force, but is given five days to clear herself by proving Lewis' frame-up. While Evelyn, Gladys and Norma plead Augusta's case to the police captain, Anthony shows his aunt the error of her intolerant ways. After Mrs. Worthington apologizes to her former foe, Augusta asks her to exchange clothes with her so that she can hunt for Mary's safe-deposit key. Eventually Augusta discovers the key hidden in the baby's rattle and, with the help of Gladys, is able to remove the incriminating evidence from the bank. Augusta then plots with Mrs. Worthington, Anthony, Peggy, her parolees and a friendly forger to trick Lewis into a recorded confession at a hotel. After a brief confrontation between Anthony and Lewis, the police arrest the gangster and Augusta is vindicated. To Augusta's delight, Mrs. Worthington declares her desire to adopt Mary's baby, while Anthony and Peggy announce their engagement.
