Synopsis
In the late 19th century in the Kristianstad prison Anna Mansdotter recalls her recent past as she awaits execution for incest and murder. At her trial Anna is accused of having had sexual relations with her son, Per, and having conspired with him to murder his wife, Hanna, whose body was found in the cellar of Per's farmhouse. The two defendants steadfastly protest their innocence, but Anna later admits to participating in the crime after Per has been tricked into making a false confession. As she waits for an appeals court to consider their case, Anna recalls that Per married Hanna only to curtail rumors about an incestuous relationship with his mother and to secure his wife's dowry. The two women disliked each other, and each paid visits to witch Grave-Karna, seeking advice to aid her desired domination of Per. Hanna eventually tired of her husband's inability to consummate their marriage and tried to force Per into sexual intercourse; instead, Per beat her into unconsciousness and Anna strangled her. Minutes later Anna is decapitated.
