Synopsis

In the Scottish town of Loch Lake during the 17th century Martha Gunt, condemned as a witch and burned at the stake, leaves a curse on the village. Years later, her newly-married granddaughter, also named Martha Gunt, goes to live with her bridegroom in the witch's castle. Certain manifestations of witchcraft lead the villagers to believe that the witch has returned, and they attack the castle, holding Martha captive. Martha's husband seeks the help of a shepherd named Maciste who is exceptionally strong. Maciste uproots a tree and descends into Hell, where he searches for the witch in the hope of removing the spell she has cast on Loch Lake. Maciste encounters a series of difficulties in the burning underworld as he seeks the witch. At last he kisses her, putting an end to the curse and saving Martha and the villagers.
