Synopsis

The problems of the Ishikawa family who live in a Tokyo suburb center around the five daughters. The eldest of storekeeper Ichikawa's daughters runs an apartment house, while her husband is gone for months at a time chasing other women. The second daughter pursues a career and brings shame to the family by refusing to marry. The fourth and fifth daughters fall in love with the same man, Aoyama, a low-salaried clerk. Running the household is the widow of the family's first son. The third daughter arrives with her husband and begins working on a match between the fourth daughter and the wealthy Komiya. A salesman, the estranged son of Ishikawa's second wife, moves into the first daughter's apartment house; and the second daughter falls in love with him, denouncing her career for plans of marriage. The salesman is exposed as a philanderer, and the widow tactfully dissolves the relationship. Meanwhile, her son fails his college entrance examination and commits suicide. The fourth daughter decides to marry the wealthy Komiya.
