Synopsis

Sheriff Terry McClay of Texana County is killed by prison escapee Lon "Utah" Evans after he and fellow fugitive Juan Romano Calinie rob the local bank. McClay's widow, Ma, takes over Terry's duties as sheriff and convinces ex-lawman Joe "Mustang" Norton to return home and capture Utah. Joe originally arrested Utah and Utah plans on seeking his revenge. Joe sends for his horse "Sonny" and as they return to town, Joe finds his son Reno injured by the side of the road. Utah has branded the young man's hand with a "U" so that he will be rejected by society and forced to seek the company of a gang. Joe sends Reno back to Utah as a spy and Reno later informs his father that the men are preparing to raid the town. Utah captures Joe and ties him up, but when Joe's guard falls asleep, Sonny chews through Joe's bindings and he escapes. Joe waits for Utah to return from the raid, but is captured again and is about to be blinded with a branding iron when Reno and his allies attack. Utah and his men leave Joe in the cabin to be blown up by Reno, but he manages to get away and captures Utah. It is decided that Utah shall hang for his crimes, and Joe and Reno become boarders with Ma McClay.
