Synopsis

After notorious outlaw Rif Caxton escapes from a prison road gang, U.S. Marshal Harlan G. Thayer assigns Eddie Dean and his sidekick, Soapy Jones, to go to Silver Spring, the town in which Caxton is rumored to be hiding, and apprehend him. Before the lawmen reach the town, Caxton sneaks into the Silver Spring jail and confronts incarcerated Sheriff Bill Devery, who has been recently arrested for robbing a stagecoach. Caxton is angry at Devery for arresting him years before and, after revealing that he was responsible for framing the sheriff in the robbery, vengefully shoots and kills him. To "smoke out" Caxton, who always wears a polkadotted hat band, Eddie, meanwhile, forces Soapy to ride into Silver Spring wearing a polkadotted hat band. As hoped, Soapy is mistaken for Caxton by the townspeople, but is immediately spotted by Caxton and his reluctant partner, corrupt saloon owner Clark Varney, who are hiding in Varney's back office. Soapy is confronted by Varney and, as Eddie refuses to clear him, is arrested as Caxton by Josh Huckings, the new, crooked sheriff. Eddie then rides toward Devery's ranch and is attacked on the road by Sam, one of Varney's henchmen. After knocking Sam out, Eddie meets Devery's daughter Martha, who tells him about her father's murder and frame-up. Suspecting that Caxton is behind both crimes and that Varney is in cahoots with him, Eddie returns to town to talk to the saloon keeper. When Eddie reveals to Varney that he and Soapy are working for the marshal, Varney has Eddie tied up in his office. Eddie soon escapes from the saloon, however, and informs Huckings about Soapy's real identity. At his hideout, Caxton, meanwhile, threatens to expose Varney as a wanted criminal unless he and his men follow his orders. A short time later, Huckings releases Soapy and tells him that Eddie wants to meet him in a certain canyon. After Eddie watches the unsuspecting Soapy ride out of town, he is shot at by Huckings. Eddie soon gets the better of the sheriff and forces him to reveal Caxton's plans to kill Martha, frame Soapy for the crime and take over the Devery ranch. Eddie races to the ranch, but learns from Martha's ranch hands that she has just ridden off with four suspicious-looking men. While Eddie and the ranch hands follow Martha's trail, Soapy is caught and imprisoned at Caxton's hideout, along with Martha. The irrational Caxton then shoots Varney, whom he suspects of double-crossing him. Before Caxton can kill Martha, Eddie and his men arrive and begin firing on the hideout. During the ensuing gunfight, Caxton flees on his horse but is apprehended and knocked out by the fast-riding Eddie. Later, Martha invites Eddie and Soapy to settle down on her ranch, but the lawmen politely decline her offer and ride off to their next adventure.
