Synopsis

Inez, the beautiful widow of the Duke of Rye, seeks a change from her dull English life and runs away from her aristocratic relatives, Lord and Lady Holloway, and Lady Maynard, for an evening at the casino in Monte Carlo. There she meets Major Allan Chepstow. Returning from the casino, Inez is accosted in her hotel lobby by nouveau riche Rose Torrent and her husband John, the Marmalade King, and snubs them. Rose wants to break into English society and is hoping Inez, who is her neighbor in London, will help her. Concerned about Inez, her relatives convince Eric Reynolds, a member of the diplomatic corp., to propose to her. Inez accepts, then the following day, encounters Chepstow again on the beach and is invited to accompany him to the English resort of Margate. She turns him down, but back in London, she is still bored, so, with the help of Joan, her private secretary, she impulsively decides to accept Chepstow's offer. They arrive on the same day that the Torrent Marmalade factory is having its annual outing and narrowly avoid meeting Rose. On their way back to London, Chepstow and Inez are involved in an automobile accident caused by Dopey, an American fugitive from justice. Afraid of a scandal, Chepstow takes Dopey back to his apartment. Then Rose finds a note written by Inez to Chepstow and steals it in order to blackmail Inez into attending a party that she is arranging. The night of the party, Dopey sneaks into the Torrent mansion and steals the note from Rose. Chepstow gets the letter from Dopey and is caught with it on him. Realizing that she is in love with Chepstow, Inez breaks her engagement with Eric and makes an appearance at the Torrents' party. Inez and Chepstow get married and leave for a new life in Canada.
