Synopsis

Executive Waldo Zane is planning to abscond with $2.4 million in company funds following a stockholders' meeting; Broadway star Margaret Garrison and her architect husband, Peter, are being interviewed by magazine reporter Roberta Lane; and Margaret's Hungarian director, Ladislau Walichek, is ensconced on a psychiatrist's couch, driven there by Margaret's threat to leave the theater and become a housewife. One hour later New York City is plunged into darkness by a power failure. Returning home early, Margaret finds Peter with Roberta in their Manhattan apartment. Furious, she storms out in a jealous rage, drives to their Connecticut cottage, drinks a glass of water containing a sleeping potion, and falls asleep. A few minutes later, Waldo's getaway car breaks down outside Margaret's cottage. Finding the door open, he enters the house to use the phone, sees the glass of water, and drinks from it. Then a contrite Peter arrives at the cottage and finds his wife and Waldo asleep together on the sofa; Ladislau also arrives and encourages Peter's suspicions. Once Waldo awakens, he agrees to anything in his haste to get away; but on the road, he is arrested with the stolen money then released when he convinces his employer that he took the money to protect it during the blackout. As a reward, Waldo is made president of the company, but must watch helplessly as the boss's son absconds with the money before it can be returned to the bank.
