Synopsis

The West is rapidly losing its vast herds of buffalo as the slaughter of the animals for their pelts goes unchecked, which angers the Indians, whose agreement with the government only allows them to be killed for food. Tex Houston, a Buffalo scout recently appointed by the government, works to track down buffalo poachers and, following a hunch, decides to start in Santa Fe, New Mexico. On the way to visit his mother, who lives near Santa Fe, Tex interrupts a stagecoach robbery and learns from the outlaws' leader, Don "Three fingers" Rogel, whom he knows well, that she has been murdered. He also learns that Rogel is being blamed for robberies he has not committed. Vowing to track down the killers, Tex decides to go incognito to Santa Fe. In town he meets Laddie Grey, one of the women on the stage, and her brother Jeff, who heads the local freight line. Because the town has no marshal, Tex becomes the choice of Foster and Sellers, the secret leaders of the buffalo poaching gang, who think that Tex will keep the honest citizens happy without interfering with their illegal activities. Tex tricks them, however, and cleans up the town. After a barn dance at which a wounded man stumbles in after being shot by one of Foster's outlaws, Foster decides that Tex must go. Tex has a hunch that Jeff's freight shipment will be robbed again and waits, but he is too late to prevent the attempted robbery and murder of the driver. He goes to Rogel, who actually is his uncle, and learns that Foster has been in contact with someone in Cripple Creek and that a broken gold nugget that Rogel found beside his sister's body comes from a mine at Cripple Creek. Foster then frames Tex and his friend Ananais for the murder of the driver and, while Tex is in jail, one of Foster's men shoots Jeff as he attempts to drive his shipment himself. After breaking out of jail with the aid of his friend Peewee, Tex chases Foster down and, aided by his uncle, captures him. When Tex finds Foster's watch fob, he and Rogel realize that its broken gold nugget matches the piece found beside Tex's mother's body. Rogel draws his gun, but Tex stops him, saying that shooting is too good for Foster.

Notes

Variety erroneously calls Tex Ritter's character "Tex Hauston" instead of "Tex Houston." Modern sources include the following additional cast members: Blackie Whiteford, Curt Massey and Ritter's horse, White Flash.
