Synopsis

Wanda Werner, a quiet farm girl, attends her high school graduation dance in the company of her uncle Hugo, but hopes for at least one dance with the class president, Norman Crocker. To her delight, Norman does ask her to dance, but only because he has accepted a bet to do so. Just before the reading of the class prophecies, Wanda's classmates realize that they neglected to make a prophecy for her. Because she is so quiet, no one really knows her, and the resulting unflattering prediction sends her from the room crying. Determined to put her unhappy past behind her, Wanda moves to New York to study singing. She has no luck there either, until she meets press agent Andy Russell. He hires her to drive a flock of geese down a busy street as a publicity stunt for a play. In return, he gets her a job singing for a morning exercise program. When she is fired from the job, she angrily accuses Andy of lying to her. Seeing her angry for the first time, Andy convinces a producer that she is a great actress. After he remakes her image, he helps Wanda learn the Broadway singing style. As the star of Jack O'Lantern Girl , Wanda is a big success. Andy tells her how much he loves her, intending to ask her to marry him, but when she announces that she is making a visit home, he thinks she is going to see her "boyfriend," Norman, whose picture she keeps in her room. The entire town comes out to welcome Wanda home. At a party in her honor, Norman turns all his charm on her, greatly upsetting his loyal girl friend, Irene Henry. Discovering how shallow Norman is, Wanda realizes that she loves Andy. She hurries back to New York to tell Andy that she loves him, too.
