Synopsis
"Shamrock" Ellison and his friend, Lucky X. Hayden, who lost his hearing in the war, are on their way to visit Shamrock's mother, unaware that they are being followed by Marshal Charlie Blythe, who is hunting an outlaw known as The Cyclone Kid. Shamrock and Lucky are ambushed by members of Cyclone's gang, who have mistaken Shamrock for the marshal, and when the shootout is over, one of the outlaws is dead and Blythe is injured. Blythe gives Shamrock his badge and makes him a special deputy, and they predict that Cyclone and his gang will head to Brazos, which is where Shamrock's mother lives. Shamrock decides to pose as Blythe, so that if he and Lucky capture Cyclone, the marshal will receive the reward money. Meanwhile, at a ranch in Brazos, outlaws Sam and Ricco report to Cyclone, who reveals that while they were robbing a stagecoach, he found a letter notifying the heir to the Lazy Dollar ranch that oil had been discovered on the adjoining property, and that the oil company is offering $75,000 to lease the ranch. Cyclone tells his men that he went into town and made his claim on the ranch as the heir, James Everett Parkington Ellison. When they reach Brazos, Shamrock and Lucky stop at Cyclone's ranch and request a doctor for the injured man, who has been taken to Manuel's sheep ranch. As soon as they leave, Cyclone dispatches Sam and Ricco with orders to kill the men, but Shamrock and Lucky thwart the attack, and Ricco is injured and captured. They bring Ricco to Cyclone's ranch, where Shamrock, identifying himself as Marshal Blythe, instructs Cyclone to turn him over to the sheriff. After they leave, Sam rides up and shows Cyclone a letter addressed to Shamrock that he found lying on the trail. Later, Shamrock and Lucky call on Ann Green, Shamrock's old friend, who sadly reports that Shamrock's mother died a month before. Ann, who knows Shamrock only by his nickname, adds that his brother, James Ellison, arrived a week after to claim the ranch and will appear in court this afternoon to prove his identity. Shamrock then notices that the letter from his mother is missing, but Lucky and Ann agree to vouch for his identity at the hearing. Meanwhile, Cyclone visits the sheriff of Brazos, who is known as The Colonel, and reports that he shot Ricco while he was trying to escape. Later, at the courthouse, Judge Deacon is about to rule in favor of Cyclone's claim when Shamrock stands up and declares himself the rightful heir. Deacon calls Ann and Lucky to the stand, but finds their testimony inconclusive. When Cyclone claims that Shamrock is impersonating an officer and accuses him of being The Cyclone Kid, Deacon orders him arrested. From across the courtroom, Lucky reads their lips as Cyclone and Sam plot to kill Blythe, and he and Shamrock flee before The Colonel can put them in jail. Cyclone and Sam join the posse and pursue Shamrock and Lucky to the sheep ranch, but when Blythe recognizes Cyclone as the notorious outlaw, Shamrock beats Cyclone up. Later, Lucky uses binoculars to read Shamrock's and Ann's lips, and announces to Deacon and The Colonel that there is going to be a wedding.
