Synopsis

As rancher Brad Buckner and his cowboys head to their new ranch, the Bar W, they hear a gunshot. Realizing that the last two buyers of this ranch had been mysteriously murdered, the cowboys, especially Bob Nolan, are worried that Brad is a marked man. Brad and the cowboys are surprised to find Jean Wayne awaiting them with a rifle when they enter the ranch house. When Jean realizes that they are the rightful owners of the ranch, she explains that her father, J. B. Wayne, sold Brad the ranch and she was just protecting their investment. While Brad and Jean become acquainted, Link Murdock, the saloon owner, is informed by his henchmen, Dirkin and Cinch, about the new arrivals at the Bar W. Murdock, afraid that Brad will discover the herd of rustled cattle he is hiding on the ranch, sends Dirkin back to the Bar W to murder Brad. At dinner that night, Bob saves Brad's life when he spots Dirkin pointing a gun through an open window. The next day, Brad and the cowboys go into town to sign the ranch's deed when they are tricked into entering Murdock's saloon. Brad is coerced into a fight with Murdock, and Bob once again saves him from a bullet in the back. On their way back to the ranch, Brad and the cowboys barely escape an ambush by Murdock's men. They capture Shorty, one of Murdock's men, and pretend to lynch him when the sheriff arrives, thus allowing Shorty to escape. The sheriff tells Brad that he witnessed the ambush and agrees to help the cowboys set a trap for Murdock. The sheriff then returns to town and tells Murdock that Brad will be swearing out warrants for his men, knowing that they will go into hiding so Brad and his cowboys can search the ranch. That night, Brad and the cowboys hold a birthday party for Jean at the Bar W. After cutting the cake, Brad takes Jean outside and gives her his mother's earrings as a birthday and pre- engagement gift. As the party ends, Murdock sneaks up to the ranch house, and overhears Brad and the sheriff congratulating each other over the success of their plan. Murdock kidnaps the Waynes and the sheriff and plans to move his cattle the next day. Jean, however, escapes that morning, and rides to tell Brad and his men of Murdock's plans. Discovering that Jean is gone, Murdock's men plan a second ambush for the cowboys, but J. B. and the sheriff sneak off just in time to warn Brad and his men. The two sides engage in a fierce gun battle, and Murdock, realizing his side is losing, sneaks back to town. Brad follows him and catches Murdock, removing all of his ill-gotten money from the saloon. The two fight, but Murdock loses and is finally arrested. With all their troubles over, Brad and Jean finally become officially engaged and plan their new lives at the now-peaceful Bar W.
