Synopsis
After working six months straight without a day off, shipyard laborer Johnny Adams and his fellow workers are given one hundred dollar bonuses and the weekend off by the Kendall Shipyard. While his friends go off to seek female companionship, Johnny decides to spend a quiet weekend alone at the Havenhurst Inn. Arriving at the hotel, Johnny meets runaway socialite Barbara "Babs" Bradley, and when Babs mistakenly drives off with his jacket, Johnny is forced to jump aboard her moving convertible. The two are caught in a rainstorm with the car's top down, so Babs invites Johnny into her home to dry off. Band leader Ray, who is in love with Babs, then arrives in a drunken stupor, and Babs convinces Johnny to help her return the intoxicated Ray to his nightclub. After the two have dinner together, Babs drives Johnny back to the inn, where he briefly sees her photograph on the front page of the morning paper. Johnny, thinking that she is in trouble with the law, then agrees to help Babs steal all the papers in the small town, but their plot fails when the stolen papers blow out the back of her convertible. Later, while hiding in the woods, the underage Babs confesses to Johnny that she is a runaway socialite who wants to join the Army, though her grandfather, the commander of the Bradley Naval Academy, insists that she follow family tradition and join the Navy. Soon thereafter, Babs's dress is found in the woods, and it is assumed by the authorities that she has been kidnapped by Johnny, whose wallet is found in her abandoned car. Learning of his predicament, Johnny forcibly returns Babs to her grandfather. After a discussion with Johnny's boss, John James "J. J." Kendall, Commander Bradley agrees to let Babs join the Army, but she informs her grandfather that she has now decided to join the Navy. Later that evening, Johnny and Babs kiss and, with his weekend leave over, Johnny returns to the shipyard. The next morning he receives a telegram from Babs, and when he reads her steamy proclamation of love in the shower, it causes his brand-new suit to shrink.
