Synopsis

An impoverished family lives in a crumbling blockhouse on the bleak Picardy shore in northern France. The father, once a respected fisherman, is now an alcoholic; his wife, having lost all interest in him, has casual sex with local fishermen. The household also is comprised of a young daughter, a retarded son, and a teenaged niece. A stranger employed at a nearby gravel works appears and disrupts their lives. He seduces the mother; and one day, while he and she are making love in the sand, they are observed by the retarded son. Frightened, he runs into quicksand and is pursued by his mother; both drown when the tide comes in. The stranger now turns his attention to the niece, and they leave together. The father and daughter are left alone to face their uncertain future.
