Way ... Way Out

Brief Synopsis

The Americans and Russians each have a two-person base on the Moon The Americans have had to keep replacing their astronaut teams because they quickly go crazy; they have been using only male astronauts on the unspoken assumption that this would avoid any possibility of impropriety. The Russians, as godless Communists, are under no such constraints, and their male-female team has remained well-adjusted At the start of the film, a male and female American astronaut team is sent up to replace the sex-starved all-male team. The government insists on them being married first to preserve morality. Most of the story revolves around the eventual consummation of this marriage of convenience, and around their relationship with their Russian neighbors, who keep casually dropping by.

Synopsis

In 1994, two U. S. weathernauts stationed on the moon are accused of attacking Anna Soblova, a Russian citizen manning the Soviet lunar station. The situation becomes critical, and the American Weather Director, Harold Quonset, decides to replace the two male weathernauts with a married couple. Peter Mattemore, the only eligible man for the job, is persuaded to marry astronomer Eileen Forbes, although she stipulates that they are to be married in name only. On the moon, Peter and Eileen find the two bewildered, half-crazed U. S. weathernauts, as well as the voluptuous Anna and her unmarried moon companion, Igor. Peter helps settle a squabble between Anna and Igor, and the two couples celebrate with "instant vodka." Later, the badly hungover Peter is informed by Earth that the two Russians are suspected of having planted a bomb in the U. S. weather station. Although the threat passes, another crisis develops when Anna discloses that she is pregnant, and Igor agrees to marry her. The Russians exult in the news that the first baby born on the moon will be a Russian. However, Eileen reveals that she persuaded Anna to feign pregnancy in order to trick Igor into marriage. Peter enthusiastically agrees with Eileen to compete with the Soviets for the distinction of becoming the first moon parents, and, with peace restored, the world awaits the results of the contest.
