Synopsis
The train on which 30-year-old Andrzej Leszczyc is traveling stops at the Plock station after a suicide has taken place. On the platform Andrzej sees Teresa, the woman who caused his expulsion from the university a few years before, and he decides to interrupt his trip to see her. Teresa is in Plock to submit her student design for the new cathedral. Until now, Andrzej's only income has been from the prize money won in boxing matches. Teresa introduces him to the director of the new industrial complex in Plock, and he offers him a job as supervising engineer. Andrzej hesitates to accept, but when he meets the boxing trainer of the complex, he consents to participate in the local tournament. On the evening of his first victory, he sleeps with Teresa, but since her design has been rejected and Andrzej's next match promises to be too tough, they decide to leave Plock. The boy whom Andrzej knocked out in the first round of the tournament pursues their train on a motorcycle and persuades Andrzej to return. As he reaches the ring, however, he is announced the winner in a "walkover," because the young boy failed to appear. The opponent eventually arrives and demands half of the prize, claiming that his trainer had bribed him to forfeit the bout. Andrzej refuses and challenges the boy to another fight; the challenge is taken, and Andrzej is soundly defeated.
